If you wish to work as a personal trainer, you should get certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). NASM is the world's most authoritative source on health and fitness. To apply for the NASM-CPT exam, you must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma, or be within 90 days of successfully completing it. A General Education Development (GED) credential or other diplomas rated as equivalent education by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers for secondary education are also acceptable. Furthermore, all candidates must have a current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) certification card from an approved provider. Hands-on training from accredited sources such as the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, and American Safety and Health Institute is required for CPR/AED certification.
